Semaglutide is a medication approved for the treatment of obesity in adults. It is a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 RA), similar to those used for managing type 2 diabetes, but in higher doses specifically formulated for weight management.
Semaglutide works by mimicking the effects of a natural hormone called GLP-1, which regulates appetite and food intake. It helps to reduce hunger and increase feelings of fullness, leading to decreased calorie intake and, consequently, weight loss.
Semaglutide has shown significant benefits in clinical trials, including:
Semaglutide for weight loss is administered once weekly via subcutaneous injection (under the skin). The dosage is gradually increased over several weeks to minimize side effects and improve tolerability. It can also be taken orally once a day.
Semaglutide is intended for adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher (obesity) or 27 or higher (overweight) with at least one weight-related health condition, such as hypertension or type 2 diabetes. It may be considered for individuals who have not achieved adequate weight loss with diet and exercise alone.
